There are a number of national associations responsible for phlebotomy certification. The majority of which are located in the eastern region of the United States. In truth, the majority of these associations have been in existence within the last eighty years. While the longevity of the organization should not be a deterrent to subscription to membership, what should be thoroughly examined is the reputation they hold within the industry.
One of the oldest associations is the American Society for Clinical Pathology. They were founded as far back as 1922 and can boast a membership of at least 100,000 subscribers. They are headquartered in Chicago, Illinios. Another association is the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences located in Rosemont, Illinois. They list over sixty accredited phlebotomy training and certification programs throughout the US.
A recent organization founded in 1977 is the National Phlebotomy Association, based in Landover, Maryland. This association has certified approximately 15,000 phlebotomists in the US alone.
